Historic Hawi is a place to access a True Hawai’i.  Action and Adventure packed, this town has much to offer.  From fine food, shopping, hiking or zipping through the trees hundreds of feet in the air there’s something for everyone.

 

Things to do in North Kohala

Lukes Place, a popular location for great food, live music and late night dancing.  Located right next door to the Kohala Village Inn, this restaurant and Tiki Lounge is the place for food, fun, and friends.

Big Island Eco Adventure Zip Line Tours ; Located right next door to the Inn, this popular attraction is one not to miss.  Multiple tours a day, but make sure to make reservations, for they book up fast.   Big Island Eco Adventures offers 8 zip tours climbing in height and views.  A perfect activities for the adventurous ones, from tall to small. 

Keokea Beach Park; located a few miles from Hawi.  This rugged beach is a nice place to enjoy the view and maybe catch site of a Hawaiian monk seal.  Definitely worth a stop.


If like value collecting art of just enjoy looking at it, Kohala features many galleries to enjoy.  From fine art, to rare koa wood works, and even jewelry, there’s something for everyone. You won't be able to leave this town without a memento for your trip to Hawi.

Ancient Hawaiian Petroglyphs. An area of large concentration is the Puakõ Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve, located just north of the Mauna Lani Resort.  The Muana Lani Hotel has a brochure and map and offers guided tours on the property with a Hawaiian historian.    The 1 1/2-mile Malama Trail starts north of Mauna Lani Resort; take Highway 19 to the resort turnoff and drive toward the coast on North Kaniku Drive, which ends at a parking lot; the trailhead is marked by a sign and interpretive kiosk. Go in the early morning or late afternoon, when the temperature is cooler. A total of 3,000 designs have been identified, including paddlers, sails, marchers, dancers, and family groups, as well as dog, chicken, turtle, and deity symbols. 

Kamehameha Day Parade; Kohala is the Birth place of Hawaii's King Kamehameha.  The original honorary statue is erected in Kapa’au town just minutes down the road.  On June 11th every year there is a parade to honor his birth.  Fabulous festivities, and eye pleasing entertainment emerges.  Floral drapped horses and queen upon the backs rides in represntation of each Island.  Hula Halaus from around the Island come out to dance, sing, and celebrate.  It's a day not to be missed!
